Cabin Life: Dreams on Paper, Tippman
How would you like to stay outside all day under a covered porch? We designed a modestly sized cabin to be able to do just that. With nearly 1,400 square feet of covered outdoor space, this is a perfect cabin for those of us who enjoy a summer breeze. Check out the watercolor rendering and right-sized floor plans in Cabin Life's feature of this cozy lodge...

Cosmopolitan Home Grand Rapids: Contemporary Home Tours
The first feature focuses on the Essex, a "Penthouse in the City." An über modern pad with all the energy of a booming metropolis as it's backdrop is nestled on an upper floor of River House Condominiums in downtown Grand Rapids.
The second article, featuring our design called the Kessler, has quite a contrasting venue. It offers a similar minimalist, modern design, but this time is settled in a country, wooded lot, proving that contemporary designs can fit with any landscape.
The Project Teams:
Essex - built by Falcon Custom Homes; cabinetry by Woodways;
Kessler - built by Bouwkamp Builders; Interiors by Mary George; Lanscaping by Landscape Design Services, Inc.

Spring Parade of Homes
Spring is in the air. Flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, trees are budding and its a torrential downpour outside right now. Ahh, Spring in Michigan.
Do you know what else is in the air, something that we in the building industry love almost more than all the rest? The smell of new construction. Freshly finished wood floors, new carpet, fresh paint and crisp green landscaping just starting to bud. I can just smell it now.
Come to the Parade of Homes, sponsored by the Home Building Association of Greater Grand Rapids, starting this weekend to soak up some "new house" smell while you tour 65 beautiful new constructions around West Michigan!
We have two projects in the Parade this Spring. A new home in Manchester Hills built by Schultz Builders, called the Kettner. It was designed to meet the immediate and future needs of a family with room to grow, as families so often do. It features custom-built cabinets throughout, in-floor heat on all floors, a luxury Wolf appliance package, an in-ground swimming pool, a screened porch with fireplace, an exercise room with sauna and a security system with video monitoring, plus much more.
You can also take a virtual tour of one of our waterfront designs built by Ashby Builders with interiors by Francesca Owings Interiors Design. This cozy lakefront summer cottage, called Allenwood, offers plenty of space for family and friends to enjoy a beautiful Michigan summer together. From custom-built bedroom furniture to the round family game table booth, every area of this home demonstrates how the right team can produce exceptional results.

Builder Magazine: Home Offices
Builder Magazine Online just published an article about home offices, an increasingly popular feature of most of our home designs these days. According to the US Census Bureau, nearly 1 in 10 work out of their homes at least part of the time. This statistic has increased dramatically in the last 10 years, increasing demand in all tax brackets, not just the luxury market anymore.
As you have seen us post here on our blog, a home office can take a variety of shapes based on the needs of our clients. We have had clients who want a room (or two) designated as a home office or study, often used when one or both of the homeowners work primarily from home. Others want something a little smaller and more casual to work from, so we design more of a home management center close to the main living/working areas of their home, like the kitchen. Still others have young children and want shared work spaces for them to do homework and play games, often having to accommodate space for upwards of three occupants at once.
Builder Magazine's article includes pictorial examples of the variety of ways a home office is shaping up in today's home designs, featuring three of our designs (images #7, 8 and 9). Read on for the full article...

No matter who your buyers are, the habit of working from home is likely growing within their ranks: According to a 2010 survey by the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 1 in 10 American workers operates out of their home at least part of the time—a number that's been growing over the past decade. As a result, home offices—once relegated to the move-up and luxury markets—are now in demand by buyers in all tax brackets. “We’re finding that even in affordable housing, people are saying, ‘Hey, I know it’s a one-bedroom, but is there any way you could squeeze in some home office space?’” says Oakland, Calif.–based architect Mike Pyatok. Such “offices” can take the shape of anything from a strategically placed built-in desk to a transition space that pulls double duty.
In the suburbs, single-family housing is seeing a shift as well, according to Nick Lehnert, executive director of research and development at Irvine, Calif.–based KTGY, who reports that today’s buyers are eschewing the tradition of placing offices at the front of the home, preferring instead to keep desk clutter out of view by putting work space toward the rear but connected to main living areas.
Fortunately, as these projects show, the work space equation can be as flexible as needed. So whether you’re working with 10 square feet or 200, there’s a home office that will fit just right.

Roofing Wizard
Is your home in need of a new roof? Are you unsure of where to start when it comes to shopping for shingles? Our friends over at GAF Roofing have a great new resource called the GAF Roofing Wizard that can help! It allows a homeowner to both educate themselves on the GAF Lifetime Roofing System and explore the shingle designs and color options that are available. It also walks you through the process of selecting different roofing and warranty option to fit your style and budget.
Once you put in your zip code to know what is available in your area, you can explore browsing by shingle color family, exterior home color palette, or by home style.
If you search by home style, you may or may not recognize some of the images. (hint, hint!)
Once you select a shingle, it will walk you through the warrantees available and accessories offered for that particular shingle.
Voila! Roofing selections made simple.
The Roofing Wizard can be used on their website -- click here -- or is also available as a free app for the iPhone or iPad through iTunes. Here is a little glimpse of what the wizard can do...
The startup screen allows you two paths to choose: 1) Help me choose a shingle, or 2) I know the shingle I want.
If you search by home style, you may or may not recognize some of the images. (hint, hint!)

Sadie's Ice Cream Parlor at the Grand Hotel
Located just outside the east entrance to the Grand Hotel, the ice cream shop will be traditional in decor, with white houndstooth awnings, cafe tables with white marble tops accompanied by cafe chairs of twisted iron. The shop is named after the 2010 Westminster "Best in Show" Scottish Terrier belonging to the Grand Hotel's owners. The shop will be serving delicious Hudsonville Ice Cream and will open it's doors to the public tomorrow, May 3.
We were honored to be a part of such a historic addition to the iconic hotel near and dear to the hearts of us Michiganders.
Here are a few progress shots of the parlor throughout the construction progress (courtesy of the Grand Hotel's blog) as well as our design renderings and 3D imagery.
Cheers to a successful summer season on the island!
